Minimum 5% pay increase when you complete training.
We also offer 4%-night shift differential once you complete training and on-call pay.
General Overview: Under the general supervision of the Communications Shift Supervisor, the Communications Officer is responsible for completing required training in order to perform specialized clerical and public contact duties related to receiving and transmitting emergency and non-emergency messages for the City’s emergency services. This position involves handling a high volume of radio and telephone messages, monitoring alarm systems, assisting the public, and managing information transmission and storage.
Upon successful completion of all required training and certifications, progression through the training program must lead to full certification and classification as a Communications Officer within twelve (12) months of hire, with a maximum probationary period of eighteen (18) months. There will be a 5% pay increase provided upon promotion to Communications Officer.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Receive and accurately process emergency and non-emergency calls. - Transfer calls to appropriate departments or agencies. - Maintain accurate logs and records in the CAD system. - Operate manual backup systems in the event of CAD failure. - Assist police and fire personnel by coordinating resources and relaying information. - Operate FCIC/NCIC systems and other communication-related equipment. - Dispatch and monitor fire units and emergency services. - Monitor alarms in the Communications Center. - Communicate with the public and media. - Interpret maps and provide accurate directions.
Training and Certification: - Attend the next available State of Florida Department of Health accredited 911 Public Safety Telecommunication Course. - Maintain academic standards required by the training facility and the Department of Health. - Obtain Florida Department of Health 911 Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification within one year of employment. - Obtain FCIC/NCIC certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain throughout employment. - Complete a two-week Communications Orientation.
Minimum Qualifications: - High school diploma or GED required. - Prior experience in dispatching, telecommunications, or high-pressure public contact roles preferred. - Must pass interview, background investigation, polygraph, and required CritiCall testing (minimum 35 WPM., 3500 KSPH, 80% overall score).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Proficient typing and multitasking skills under stressful conditions. - Strong knowledge of city and surrounding area geography. - Familiarity with modern telecommunications and dispatch systems. - Ability to prioritize and disseminate multiple conversations and incoming data. - Ability to maintain composure and clarity in emergency situations. - Ability to condense complex information into concise, accurate reports. - Strong verbal and written communication skills. - Ability to maintain effective relationships with co-workers and the public. - Ability to work varied schedules including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical and Mental Requirements: - Ability to hear and understand normal and varied tones of voice. - Ability to sit for extended periods and operate a keyboard. - Ability to carry, lift, bend, stoop, and retrieve items weighing up to 15 lbs. - Must handle stress and multitasking effectively. - Ability to work in an environment with low-level background noise. - Ability to speak clearly while typing simultaneously.
