Communications Specialist, Legal & Regulatory

Location

Open to remote in the U.S. or based in the office. Candidates in Washington D.C. strongly preferred.

Key Responsibilities

• Developing and executing policy-related communications strategies and outreach channels including press conferences, one-on-one meetings with the media and opinion leaders (i.e. elected officials, appointed officials, etc.), press releases, editorial board meetings, and social media.
• Managing content for the [program/project] Twitter handle.
• Building and maintaining positive working relationships with targeted online, print and broadcast journalists, editorial writers and columnists, as well as with other opinion leaders.
• Researching and pitching EDF experts for thought-leading speaking events.
• Garnering, tracking and marketing earned media exposure in media outlets.
• Helping to maintain electronic files, including media lists, press clips, collateral materials, etc.
• Generating proactive ideas for timely, on-message communications content for feature media coverage, improved engagement with influencers, etc.
• Drafting opinion editorials, blogs, press releases, etc. with nuanced message under tight time constraints.
• Cultivating and maintaining key reporter relationships, and creating/distributing press materials under deadline pressure.
• Executing long-term strategic communications planning while maintaining an opportunistic approach to daily, breaking news events.
• Developing and executing offline and online strategic communications outreach plans to advance program activities.
• Serving the communications needs of the [program/project], development and communications staff.
• Participates in advancing EDF organizational effectiveness and culture goals, so people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address environmental and organizational challenges in ways that align with EDF values.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

• A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
• Bachelor degree in journalism, public relations, communications or marketing or advance degree may substitute for two years of experience.
• Proficiency with social media tools and outlets required.
• Proficiency in Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and Internet required.
• Practical, real-world experience in environmental media and communications.
• Experience working on local and/or statewide press outreach.
• Basic graphic and web design and video editing experience.
• Superior creative and opportunistic media outreach abilities.
• Excellent writing, proofing and editing skills.
• Experience managing contractors (i.e. Web and graphic designers, communications consultants, etc.).
• Excellent telephone, oral communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to adapt to frequent change and prioritize multiple tasks effectively under deadline pressure.
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
• Interest in environment advocacy.
• Familiarity with cutting-edge communication technologies preferred (i.e. Vocus, etc.).
• Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across all cultures and backgrounds.
