Company History

The Congregation of Holy Cross is an apostolic, Roman Catholic community of priests and brothers. Founded in 1837, our founder Blessed Basil Moreau called on us to be "educators in the faith," who with a preferential option for the poor, educate both mind and heart principally in education, parish, and mission settings. We draw from our founder Blessed Basil Moreau's trust in Divine Providence and zeal to make “God known, loved and served;” and “our mission sends us across borders of every sort.”

Following the education, parish, mission model, the United States Province of Priests and Brothers has four colleges and universities: the University of Notre Dame (Notre Dame, Ind., 1842), University of Portland (Portland, Ore., 1901), King’s College (Wilkes-Barre, Pa., 1946), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass., 1948).

There are 13 parishes in the United States, from Vermont to Texas to Oregon to Florida, as well as two in México.

Our ministries/apostolates include André House, in Phoenix, and the Saint André Bessette Catholic Church, in Portland, Ore., both of which serve the homeless and the working poor. Ave Maria Press is the leading Catholic publisher of spiritual books, parish resources and Catholic high school religion textbooks. Holy Cross Family Ministries in North Easton, Mass., was founded by Holy Cross priest Servant of God Patrick Peyton. Holy Cross Family Ministries encompasses Family Theater Productions, Family Rosary, and Father Peyton Family Institute.

Our international mission work reaches into México, Chile, Perú, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

The U.S. Province is made up of approximately 400 priests and brothers, and more than a 100 young men in formation around the world. The Province is headquartered in Notre Dame, Ind.
