Company History

Today, Mattel is the largest toy company in the world, with net sales of more than $6 billion. But our roots are much more humble. Mattel was founded in 1945 by husband and wife team, Elliot and Ruth Handler, in a garage workshop in Southern California, just a few miles from our worldwide headquarters today. Elliot – an aspiring inventor and designer – took out a line of credit to buy tools from Sears Department store and installed a small workshop in the garage of the apartment building where he and Ruth lived. He began by making picture frames. Elliot, not wanting to waste the left over materials from the frames, took the scraps and turned them into furniture for doll houses. And that’s how Mattel was born – through what today we’d call an effort in sustainability.

Now, more than six decades later, Mattel makes some of the world’s most innovative and beloved toys each and every year – brands like Barbie, Hot Wheels, Fisher-Price and American Girl top the list. Our toys have put millions of smiles on the faces of many generations of children around the world.

And our employees also have a lot to smile about. In January 2009, Mattel was named to FORTUNE Magazine’s prestigious “100 Best Companies to Work for” list, ranking number 48.

Mattel is not only one of the best places to work, it's also a lot of fun. If you're as excited about the future as we are, consider this opportunity.
