Based in Boulder, Colorado, Outdoor Industry Association (OIA) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit trade association and the leading trade association for the outdoor industry. OIA unites and serves manufacturer, supplier, sales representative, and retailer members through its focus on trade and recreation policy, sustainable business innovation, research, advocacy, and outdoor participation. OIA also established and sponsors the Outdoor Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission centered on engaging American youth in active, outdoor lifestyles and nature-based education and activities.
About the Position
The Director of Marketing & Communications is a key leader responsible for executing the strategic direction of OIA's marketing, branding, and communications work. This role is ideal for a hands-on, collaborative professional who can build brand visibility, deliver member value, and support the development and optimization of member-facing programs and services. The Director will help shape how OIA tells its story, grows its influence, and evolves its offerings, ensuring that every initiative reflects our values, meets the needs of our members, and drives measurable impact.
This position reports to the President of OIA and is remote with event-related travel.
Essential Functions of the Job
- Collaborate across the organization to develop and execute a holistic marketing and communications plan that integrates pillars and demonstrates member value, in support of the multi-year board-approved strategic direction.
- Utilize B2B data-driven marketing strategies to retain and prospect for new OIA members.
- Help coordinate the composition of department and outsourced resources necessary to complete strategic goals, in collaboration with the leadership team, board membership committee, and other stakeholders.
- Support workforce plans, budgets, and project outlines to ensure functional areas have the resources needed to move forward.
- Execute and measure integrated programs across all channels including events, education, digital platforms, collateral, and publications — including support for the Outdoor Foundation.
- Steward the quality, improvement, and reach of OIA's "voice" in the outdoor industry and beyond, ensuring that the message is infused into all communications.
- Demonstrate marketing performance and progress through standard reports, dashboards, and metrics.
- Support OIA's board committee work focused on membership, value, and strategic product delivery.
Responsibilities
Marketing & Brand Leadership
- Develop and execute the marketing and communications strategy supporting organizational priorities and growing OIA's influence.
- Manage brand positioning, messaging, and visual identity across all platforms.
- Lead integrated campaigns across digital, social, PR, and content to support advocacy, sustainability, and participation initiatives.
- Support executive visibility efforts and serve as a representative for OIA when appropriate.
Member & Product Strategy
- Support the development and lifecycle management of OIA's member-facing programs, services, and digital products (e.g., research reports, policy toolkits, events, education, resource hubs).
- Collaborate across departments to assess member needs, identify new product opportunities, and help prioritize development based on business value and member impact.
- Drive internal communications to ensure OIA staff are equipped for strong member conversations.
- Collaborate with pillar and sales teams to build programs and products that support the organization's strategic plan.
- Define and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for product success, value delivery, and user engagement.
Digital Strategy & Innovation
- Manage OIA's digital platforms, including website, CRM, marketing automation, and content delivery systems.
- Drive user-centered design and member experience improvements across digital touchpoints.
- Measure, refine, and report on the effectiveness of member communication strategies.
- Partner with technology vendors and internal stakeholders to scope, develop, and enhance digital offerings.
- Team & Budget Management
- Lead and mentor a small team of marketing, communications, and product professionals.
- Manage related budgets, ensuring effective allocation of resources across marketing and product priorities.
- Manage marketing vendor relationships and agency partnerships to ensure the highest return on investment for member value.
Requirements
Required Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree required
- 7+ years of progressive experience in marketing, product strategy, or digital engagement, with at least 3 years in amanagement or leadership role.
- Demonstrated success in developing and executing integrated marketing and brand strategies.
- Experience with product management, member or customer experience design, and go-to-market planning.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a track record of cross-functional collaboration.
- Experience utilizing CRM, social media, and design tools.
- MS O365 proficiency.
Preferred Education & Experience
- Master's degree
- Background in trade associations, nonprofits, or mission-driven organizations
- Familiarity with the outdoor recreation economy or adjacent industries
- Strong understanding of digital tools, analytics, and CRM/marketing automation platforms
- Passion for outdoor participation, environmental sustainability, and equity in the outdoors
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $95,000 to $115,000 annually
- This range reflects the compensation OIA reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and internal equity.
